Adopting Our Dogs

Our general adoption fee is $375-475 for adults and $475 for puppies.  The average cost of each dog we adopt out is around $1,500. The costs for everything has skyrocketed. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, microchip registration and up to date vaccinations and socializing. The rescue works hard to rehabilitate each dog that comes thorough our doors. We have a staff of 25 people to help take care for over 100 dogs at any one time.  We are able to do what we do because of the donations we get from our Westside families!

We have an adoptions every Wednesday (11am-3pm), Saturday (11am-4pm) and Sunday (1pm-4pm) at the rescue at 3016 S Hill St, Los Angeles 90007. No appointment is necessary on these days. We can also show dogs on other days BY APPOINTMENT only if it is a hardship. Check with your screener if you are interested in a puppy or dog in foster care. Puppies are typically in foster homes. We do require that you submit an ADOPTION APPLICATION before we show you our dogs. We look forward to helping you find the right dog!

If the dog you adopted doesn’t work out and you have given the dog your best effort, we welcome you to try another dog, if it is within a reasonable time of your original adoption. If you decide not to adopt again, then we will give you a receipt for your tax-deductible donation to help the dogs. We are a non-profit, mostly volunteer-run organization. All proceeds go towards the rescue, medical care, spay or neuter, vaccination and boarding of the dogs.

Upon receipt of your application, a Westside adoption counselor will contact you. We do aerial home checks and you may be asked to supply pictures as well as arranging for a home visit prior to adoption. PLEASE ALLOW 72 HOURS FOR US TO GET BACK TO YOU. IF YOU DON’T HEAR BACK AFTER 72 HOURS, PLEASE EMAIL US (don’t forget to check your spam folder, email, and voice mail to make sure you didn’t miss our response).

OUT OF STATE AND CANADA ADOPTIONS, PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE YOU PROCEED WITH THE APPLICATION:

We are unable to adopt to Hawaii due to the non-availability of air transportation and the complicated entry system because of rabies protocol.

WE DO NOT SHIP PUPPIES UNDER THE AGE OF 5 MONTHS OUT OF STATE.

We are located in Los Angeles, CA. All transport fees are paid by the adopter and are in addition to the adoption fee. Air transportation cost varies from approximately $600 to about $1,300 IN ADDITION TO the purchase of a crate, health certificate and the adoption fee (these are estimates, as cost depends on many factors). Flights are on Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. Destination cities are subject to change by the airlines. Current destinations are Anchorage (AK), Boise (ID)*, Charlotte (NC)*, Chicago (IL)*, Dallas (TX)*, Fort Lauderdale (FL), Miami (FL)*, Newark (NJ), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), and Washington (DC). The cities with the asterisk can only accommodate a 500 crate (dimensions 40″ x 27″ x 30″, extra large). Destination availability depends on the size of the dog as well.

Ground transport to states other than Oregon and Washington will be substantially higher but does not require the purchase of a crate. Cost varies depending on destination. Ground transport to Oregon & Washington state ONLY ranges from $250 to $350 (in addition to the adoption fee) and does not require you to purchase a crate.

There is always the option of you picking up the dog – think Road Trip!

Fostering A Dog With WGSR

The first step is always filling out a Foster Application. Whether you’re fostering or adopting, we always need to make sure we match you up with the right Shepherd. They all have different personalities, likes and dislikes and it’s very important that foster families and their foster dogs live in ‘harmony’. We are looking for puppy fosters and also for dogs who aren’t doing well at the rescue.
